Two tons! That was the approximate weight of the 10-foot rough-cut timbers and other materials used June 23rd to build 200 feet of puncheon on the new “Big Tree Cutoff” section of FTA trail at Elinor Klapp-Phipps Park. Twelve hardy volunteers carried that two tons through about 500 feet of woods to the work site. Apalachee Chapter members who worked that day: Bob Woods, Justin Goodlin, Gwyn Hamel, Woody Morgan, Jerry Herting, Knox Parker, Kristine Dougherty, and Briggs Goddard. Stuart Baker, a retired faculty member, responded to a flyer posted at the park. And there were also three Tallahassee Parks and Recreation Department personnel who contributed heavily to the work: Chuck Goodheart, Lisa Cole, and Mike Terlecki. Yours truly did the design plan, work-day organization and ‘go-fer’ run to Subway Subs to pick up lunch–which was paid for by the TPRD from funds donated to the Park by the Red Hills Horse Trials organization. Everyone worked very hard and completed 200 feet of the 240-foot ‘boardwalk.’ The remaining forty feet were finished up the following week by the city workers. The puncheon now carries hikers through low-lying terrain to a lovely area containing some of the largest trees in the Park–a group of huge tulip poplars. Thank you one and all !
