Activities - December 2008

Dec 6 Saturday P/M Torreya State Park Trail Care. Hike and enjoy autumn colors as you clip back vegetation along the Torreya Challenge Trail. Bring water and lunch. We will meet in Tallahassee for carpooling. Jerry Herting 850-878-3426.

Dec 6 - 7 Sat, Sun P/L Cape St. George Island. Educational overnight field trip to Little Cape St. George Island. We’ll take a boat ride out to the island off the coast of Apalachicola and enjoy an afternoon trolling the bay waters to see what we can find. We’ll spend the night at the Marshall house on the island and take a walking tour of the island before we head back home Sunday afternoon. December 9 “Annual Holiday Social.” Bring a covered dish or dessert and an inexpensive wrapped item for the gift-exchange game. Nov 1 Saturday P/L Wade Tract Birding Hike. This popular hike will take you into one of the best remaining examples of old-growth longleaf pine/wiregrass forests left in the U.S. Jim Cox, noted ornithologist with Tall Timbers Research Station, will provide commentary and show us a red-cockcaded woodpecker colony. Nov 8 Saturday P/L 7th Annual Moonlight Hike. Experience the beauty of a full moon at Elinor Klapp-Phipps Park in northeast Tallahassee. Star- and moon-gazing compliments of the Tallahassee Astronomical Society. November 11 “Hiker’s Guide to the Prehistory and Archaeology of North Florida.” Ryan Means will inform hikers where and how to experience north Florida’s extensive archaeological record. He will tell us about the prehistoric human cultures and animals that went extinct during the last 15,000 years of our history and will teach us about projectile points–their types and ages. He’ll bring a teaching collection of artifacts for an interactive, hands-on experience. 7 p.m. at Woodcrest Office Park, 325 John Knox Rd., Bldg. F (first bldg. on the right). September 9 “The Florida Trail and YOU.” Get inspired at our hiking season kickoff meeting! See some short videos–including a brief history of the Florida Trail. Learn about building it, supporting it, and hiking it. Hear about the Trail’s current status. Find out how to get hiking information. Sept 13 Saturday P/L Orientation Tour of Phipps Park Trail for Potential Maintainers. Would you like to be a Trail Master right in Tallahassee? We’ll visit the various trail sections by car and foot so you can see whether you’d like to be responsible for a mile (or more) of the seven-plus miles of our trail in the park. Sept 27 Saturday M/M National Public Lands Day — Aucilla Wildlife Management Area Cleanup. The Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Suwannee River Water Management District have invited FTA, along with the Apalachee Canoe & Kayak Club, to participate in the cleanup along the Aucilla River and Sinks. Camping will be available on the 26th at the Goose Pasture Group Camp for those who wish to camp. Adam Young from FWC’s Hunter Education Program will demonstrate the sport of archery and there may be opportunities for canoeing after the cleanup. Additional information: 1. Please bring an ingredient to throw in the stewpot for the group meal Friday night or a side dish or dessert to share. We will have a venison stew and a vegetarian option. This is the only meal provided. You are responsible for your own breakfast and lunch on Saturday. 2. Please bring your own water bottle. We will have drinking water in coolers for refills. Please leave bottled water out of this event. 3. Bring your own canoe or kayak for the afternoon fun paddle on Saturday. Remember a life jacket and whistle. If you need a boat, please call Liz Sparks to reserve one. If you have extra boats to share, that would be welcome–please let Liz know. Aug. 12 Tue Apalachee Chapter Meeting Program: “Thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail.” Larry Thompson, a 54-year-old county Extension Office agent at the time, and his 26-year-old son, Matt, thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 1996. They had no idea what they were getting into. “Old Swamper” and “Grasshopper” will discuss preparation for–and the mental and physical difficulty of–a long-distance hike and show images of the Trail and of the other backpackers they met that year. 7 p.m. at Woodcrest Office Park, 325 John Knox Rd., Bldg. Aug. 17 Sun P/L Canoe/Kayak the Econfina. Are you looking for a great way to cool off on a hot summer day? Join us for a leisurely paddle on Econfina Creek. Don’t forget to bring snacks, plenty of water and sun protection. Afterward we will stop at the Apalachee Restaurant in Bristol for a late lunch/early dinner. Contact: Gwen Beatty 850-942-7165. July 8 Tue Apalachee Chapter Meeting Program: “Tracks & Scat: Is our Poop Fascination Hardwired?” Trackers, hunters and trappers of yore and primitive cultures depended on reading the woods for their survival. Will Sheftall, Natural Resources Agent for UF’s Leon County Extension Office, will give hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts a chance to ramp up their skills. Learn to identify animal tracks, scat, and other traces and signs found on our trails and woods roads. 7 p.m. at Woodcrest Office Park, 325 John Knox Rd., Bldg. F (first bldg. on the right). July 26 Sat P/L Slave Canal Paddle Trip. We’ll paddle 5 miles down the narrow, crystal-clear stream winding through a pristine swamp. The pace will be leisurely with refreshing dips in the cool water. Getting past fallen trees will require some maneuvering skill. Limit 12 canoes. Contact: Steve Haley 850-216-1764.

June 7 Sat P/L National Trails Day Hike. “Join Us on the Trail” and hike about 5 miles within the Leon Sinks Geological Area in celebration of the 16th Annual National Trails Day, sponsored by the American Hiking Society, and hosted by the Apalachee Chapter of the Florida Trail Association. You will see five major sinkholes, a disappearing stream, a natural bridge, and gum swamps. Bring your lunch and stay for refreshments after the hike. Terry Tenold (850) 877-1612 totenold49@aol.com

June 10 Tue Apalachee Chapter Meeting Program: “Carnivorous Plants of the Panhandle.” These plants are fascinating because of their great beauty and intrigue. The Florida panhandle has 30 of the 33 naturally-occurring Florida species of these animal-eating plants. Dr. Loran Anderson of FSU will present a program of color slides of most of the thirty and discuss their life histories and the variety of mechanisms through which they attract, capture, and digest their prey. 7 p.m. at Woodcrest Office Park, 325 John Knox Rd., Bldg. June 14 Sat P/L National “Get Outdoors Day.” Hike and play on Fort Braden Trails as we take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy some snacks, games and other recreational opportunities. Marti Miller, Florida Division of Forestry, and others will tell us about outdoor recreation in our region. Bring water, bug repellant, sturdy shoes and plan for a 3.5 mile hike. All ages welcome. June 21 Sat P/L Wakulla River Canoe Trip. We will put in at S.R. 365 and canoe this wild, scenic river about six miles to the St. Marks Boat Club. Easy paddling. We should see various birds, with a good chance of seeing alligators and manatees. Bring lunch, water, bug spray, sun screen, and binoculars. Top off the trip with swimming at the Boat Club beach.
